Dubai: The launch of the Dubai Modern Art Museum and Opera House District was announced yesterday by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The centre — an Emaar Properties project — will include Opera House, Modern Art Museum and galleries. It will be located in Downtown Dubai off the Burj Lake. The architecture will integrate plazas, streets, colonnades, courtyards, alleyways, promenades and parks.
In a media statement Shaikh Mohammad said: "The cultural accomplishments of a nation define its character and individuality.
"Having demonstrated our credentials in hosting world-class cultural events, UAE has established itself as a thriving destination for culture and the arts. We will continue to strengthen the infrastructure framework to promote cultural initiatives through projects such as the Dubai Modern Art Museum and Opera House District."
The launch couldn't have come at a more opportune moment. Dubai's art scene is at its zenith with Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai and Sikka being part of the ongoing Art Week, the umbrella initiative that promotes the region as an art destination.
Antonia Carver, Fair Director of Art Dubai, told Gulf News that this news bears testament to the city's thriving art scene.
Successful edition
"Art Dubai has seen its most successful edition going by the number of art enthusiasts and level of community involvement. The gallery scene has come of age as well.
"The local art community needed a public venue that would take Dubai to the next level; the Modern Art Museum and Opera House District will."
In a statement, Emaar Properties said: "With Dubai Modern Art Museum and Opera House District, we are further building on the support that Emaar extends to arts and culture."
